Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where do I find a class list to check available
course times and register for classes?
You can click
here, which will take you to your "Student Records" via DCCC's student portal deleGATE.
After you log into your account:
- go: "My Student Records" tab
- then: "Student Records" channel on the left side
- then: "Register for Classes" link
- next: Select the term (fall/spring) of your search from
the drop down list
- next: Select the major of your search (ex.
GRA, ART, ENG)
from the drop down list
- then: "Find Open Course Selections"
2. Who is my Academic Advisor?
When you first enroll in the program you are assigned a general academic
advisor. Soon after you will be assigned an advisor from the Graphic
Design area. By discussing options with your advisor, you should be
able to obtain a clearer picture of your career goals. In the short
term, if you wish to speak to a GRA faculty member, feel free to contact
them at any time.
3. How long will it take me to complete the Associates
Degree in Graphic Design?
The answer largely depends on the number of courses you register for per
semester. Full time students take four classes (12 credits) per semester.
Some Graphic Design students also opt to take some general requirements
during summer session I or II. Please keep in mind that some of our courses
are only offered in the Fall and some are only offered in the Spring. Please
note that there are also pre-requisites in order to register for some
classes (pre-requisites are classes that need to be completed in order
to register for a particular class.). Check the curriculum
page to view the program sequence.
4. Can I complete this program as a
part time evening student?
Unfortunately not. With the exception of 2D Design and Color & Design, our graphic design courses are generally offered
in the day only.
5. What can I expect in terms of workload/homework?
It has been estimated that a student in this program should dedicate
3 hours outside the classroom for each hour of class time per week. This
may seem like an exaggeration, but consider that you are learning to use
new tools, techniques and software. These skills require dedication of
time and repetition to successfully master each task. Pursuing a full-time
college education requires an enormous commitment to working on your studies
outside of the classroom.
6. Can I transfer to a four year program?
Although, the aim of DCCC's Associate Degree in Graphic Design is to
prepare students for workforce entry, transfer to a four year institution
provides a greater opportunity for long term success. DCCC has established
articulation agreements with several area colleges. While articulation
agreements make transfer of credit simple for general courses (english,
science etc.), transfer of studio/design courses usually requires a portfolio
review by the school for which you are applying. A portfolio review
is used to determine placement (freshmen, sophmore) level in the intended
program, and transfer of credits. As of 2007, nearly all four year institutions
that offer a four year BFA Degree require either an in-person review of your artwork or
a CD/slide submission of 12 to 20 images representing your foundation and design work.
Students from DCCC's Graphic Design have transferred to a number of four
year institutions, locally and nationally. These include: Drexel University,
Kutztown University, Moore College of Art, Philadelphia University, Pratt,
Parsons, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design,
Tyler School of Art and The University of the Arts among others.
